Our Story
Hello, my name is Liliana. I started Modla Inc. in 2018, when the idea of bringing cement tile production to Canada came to life. As a trained architect and an interior designer with over 20 years of experience, I wanted to introduce cement tiles as an option to my clients. However, before Modla Inc. was born, cement tile choices were very limited locally and having them imported from other parts of the world resulted in long lead times, lack of custom options and high shipping costs. As a local manufacturer, Modla Inc. removes those barriers and allows you to design your unique tiles virtually or visit our showroom to browse our sample library. Hope to see you soon!
Sustainability
Our cement tiles are made with all-natural ingredients: cement, marble dust, sand and iron oxide pigments. We do not use any chemicals during the production process, and, unlike encaustic tiles, cement tiles are not fired in a kiln.Cement tiles are a handmade product and therefore require minimal energy consumption. All of this makes our tiles 100% green and we are very proud to do our part for a cleaner planet.

Manufacturing Process
Just like in the 19th century, cement tiles are still handmade, one at a time. A carefully prepared mix of cement, marble dust and pigment is poured into the mold and after all of the cavities are filled, the mold is removed. This first layer is followed by a fine mix of sand and cement and the third and final layer is a mix with a slightly different proportion of cement and sand. Finally, the tile is pressed and left to cure for a month. Unlike in the old days when manual presses were used, we use powerful hydraulic presses to ensure the tiles are strong and uniform. However, just like with any handmade product, no two tiles will be the same. Slight imperfections are normal and only add to the natural appeal and the “old world” look of cement tiles.
